The Independent Centre for Mediated Learning (ICML)

Treatment

In order to learn effectively we have to be observant and think clearly. A methodical approach must become second nature. We must learn to choose the right words to organise our thoughts. We must identify, label, analyse, compare and categorise data. We must recognise links between separate pieces of information and make valid judgements. All these cognitive skills are essential for planning effective action so that we can solve problems efficiently.

Initially, using a cognitive approach, intervention places great emphasis on developing the habit of careful, painstaking analysis and an awareness of the thinking process. Knowing how to reach conclusions and how to eliminate errors develops a sense of mastery, achievement and independence.

Principles are developed and a process called 'bridging' is used extensively whereby the mediator (the teacher) actively helps the student to apply the newly learnt principle to either an aspect of learning, personal relationships or behaviour. The more links that can be found within the life of the student, the more secure the principle will become. As this bank of strategies and principles grows, so the motivation and self esteem increases.

All individuals coming to the ICML for the first time are assessed using dynamic tools to discover which cognitive skills need addressing. This is done by Consultants of the ICML who are trained in the methods of Dynamic Assessment. These tests do not examine what the individual can do, but how he/she does it. This careful analysis then ascertains the appropriate method and programme for each individual case . A suitable referral is made to an ICML trained teacher, who is experienced in dealing with the specific problems identified in the student.

Students work for one to three hours per week over a consistent period of time. Sometimes more intensive programmes are offered. Each case is different.

Most programmes of intervention at the ICML are conducted individually or in small groups. Programmes are also offered in Schools, Colleges and Industrial settings.
