The Independent Centre for Mediated Learning (ICML)
Methods and Applications
|
All treatment and training at the ICML is mainly based on the three applied systems of Feuerstein's Theory of Structural Cognitive Modifiability and Mediated Learning. Instrumental
Enrichment - the method of intervention The ICML uses a number of different methods for both treatment and training programmes which address thinking skills. These methods focus on the central role of Mediated Learning and its application in a variety of contexts. Small children benefit from perceptual and cognitive programmes from a very early age. Correct language and labels are used with attractive materials to help the small child perceive the world and make sense of his or her environment. This careful mediation enables the child to conceptualise a given problem and progress from the concrete level of functioning to the abstract. Materials are used which address skills of spatial orientation, visual perception, comparison, categorisation, organisation and planning, sequencing and ordering which are all skills we need to give us the building blocks of learning. Workshops demonstrate methods and materials developed by experts from around the world, which are effective in enhancing cognitive skills in small children. Mediated Learning is the fundamental theme for all intervention with children and young adults alike. Workshops which show the power and importance of correct mediation and its effect on the child's development are offered for professionals and parents. Older children and adults of all levels of functioning benefit from Feuerstein's programme of thinking skills, Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment. The Independent Centre for Mediated Learning offers certified training and treatment using Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment Programme. Instrumental Enrichment is applied to a remarkably wide range of diverse populations. It can be applied in remedial and mainstream schools, for rehabilitation and in commercial and industrial settings. All students applying for Clinical treatment to the ICML will be assessed by a Consultant using Dynamic Assessment tools. Further information and the ICML brochure is available on request A
